The Marx Lounge in conversation: Alfredo Jaar – David Harvey and What, How & for Whom (WHW)

As part of The Marx Lounge Alfredo Jaar engages speakers from the world of political theory and art to think about the ongoing significance of Marx in their work and in the world.

David Harvey is Distinguished Professor of Anthropology at the City University of New York Graduate School and former Professor of Geography at Johns Hopkins and Oxford Universities. The author of numerous books, he was awarded the Patron’s Medal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1995 and elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 2007. His latest books are The Enigma of Capital and A Companion to Marx’s Capital. A revised edition of his seminal Social Justice and the City was published in 2009. He is the world’s most cited academic geographer and his course on Marx’s Capital has been downloaded by well over 750,000 people since mid-2008.

What, How & for Whom/WHW is a curatorial collective formed in 1999 and based in Zagreb, Croatia. WHW organises a range of production, exhibition and publishing projects and since 2003 has been directing city-owned Gallery Nova in Zagreb. What, how and for whom, the three basic questions of every economic organisation, concern the planning, concept and realisation of exhibitions as well as the production and distribution of artworks and the artist’s position in the labour market. These questions formed the title of WHW’s first project dedicated to the 152nd anniversary of the Communist Manifesto, in 2000 in Zagreb, and became the motto of WHW’s work and the title of the collective. In 2009 WHW was curator of the 11th Istanbul Biennial ‘What Keeps Mankind Alive?’
