Join Liverpool Biennial 2021 exhibiting artists Alice Channer and SHELL LIKE in conversation with Wing-Sie Chan, Head of Programmes at a-n. Taking an in depth look at their practices, we will be exploring the works they are exhibiting as part of this year’s Biennial, The Stomach and the Port, curated by Manuela Moscoso. Channer presents a series of pleated sculptures and fabric prints at The Lewis’s Building, accompanied by a new audio work by SHELL LIKE, both of which manifest different kinds of porous and non-porous bodies, as well as geological, biological and industrial processes and materials. Following the discussion, attendees will be invited to join a collective listening of FIRST BIRTH, introduced by SHELL LIKE.

About the Artists

Alice Channer (b. 1977, Oxford, UK) lives and works in London, UK. She uses sculpture to stretch out, slow down and speed up industrial and post-industrial production processes. Her work aims to make these processes more visible to herself and to others, and to attune us to the multiple embodiments and disembodiments involved. Using materials ranging from spider crab shells and stainless steel to pelletised and recycled plastic and pleated silk, her work traces the disappearance, mutation and possible evolution of multiple bodies in post-industrial environments. Recent exhibitions include Tate Britain, UK (2019); Whitechapel Gallery, UK (2018); Aspen Art Museum, USA (2017); and Kunsthaus Hamburg, Germany (2017).

SHELL LIKE creates a dedicated space for sound work and focuses on the importance of listening - particularly as a group - as a vital social and political act. Led by writers Amy Lay-Pettifer and Fer Boyd, SHELL LIKE has developed over three years to encompass deep listening events, commissioning and producing, experiments in exhibition and event formats, and co-authored experimental writing and sound works.
