Join filmmaker and artist Afrah Shafiq for the presentation of her multimedia artwork Sultana’s Reality and a talk about the process of remixing, reinterpreting and reimagining the archive. Sultana’s Reality explores the relationship between women and books in India told through a selection of visual material from the CSSSC archives in Calcutta. She is currently in Liverpool, researching at various archives towards a new work that will explore the inner lives and minds of women in 19th century England.

Afrah Shafiq is a documentary filmmaker and artist who works with multimedia, glass, technology, archives, poetry and video. She is interested in folklore, myths, the inner lives of women, memory and dreams.

This event is the first instalment of The City is a School public programme – an experimental educational project that involves the Mediation and Volunteer team for Liverpool Biennial 2018.

Afrah Shafiq's visit is part of the New North and South programme. 

Sultana's Reality was made possible by an Archival and Museum Fellowship by India Foundation for the Arts at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta, with support from Voltas Limited.
