Liverpool Biennial Launches Four New Limited Edition Prints
Liverpool Biennial has today launched a series of four new limited edition prints. Four of the artists that were shown in Liverpool Biennial 2014 have very generously made new prints for the Biennial to sell to the public. Carlos Cruz-Diez, Judith Hopf, William Leavitt and Peter Wächtler have all created unique new pieces. Each edition bears a direct connection to artwork shown at the festival and has been numbered and signed by the artist.
Carlos Cruz-Diez has made a digital print that recalls the style and use of colour from the artist’s 2014 Dazzle Ship commission Induction Chromatique à Double Fréquence pour l’Edmund Gardner Ship / Liverpool. Paris, 2014. Co-commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, Tate Liverpool and 14-18 NOW, in partnership with National Museums Liverpool, the ‘dazzled’ Edmund Gardner ship which is owned and conserved by Merseyside Maritime Museum, is currently situated in a dry dock adjacent to Liverpool’s Albert dock. In a career spanning more than 60 years, Franco-Venezuelan artist Cruz-Diez has become known for his experiments with light, movement and colour.
Peter Wächtler’s print references a series of watercolours shown at The Old Blind School on Hardman Street. Wächtler creates drawings, videos and texts with richly narrated scenarios, often imbued with humour and satire.
Also exhibited in the Grade-II listed building were works by Judith Hopf and William Leavitt. With her limited edition print, Berlin-based Hopf revisits her sculptural work - a flock of concrete sheep cast from standard home-moving boxes.
William Leavitt is primarily concerned with narrative and its forms, borrowing motifs from science fiction, film, theatre and set design. For Liverpool Biennial, Leavitt has created Arctic Earth – elaborating on his 2014 work of the same name.
Sally Tallant, Director of Liverpool Biennial, said: “We are grateful to all of these artists who have generously made limited editions to benefit our work. Income from the editions directly supports our programme of new commissions, exhibitions, and educational projects. These pieces present an extraordinary opportunity to be a part of the Biennial’s legacy,”
The Limited Editions series provides a rare opportunity for art collectors to own unique works by celebrated contemporary artists.
