Liverpool Biennial Announces International Mentors for Associate Artists
Liverpool Biennial, in partnership with New York based Independent Curators International (ICI) and CACTUS, has announced the artist and curator pairings for the Liverpool Biennial Associate Artists Programme, a major new initiative that aims to support artists based in the North of England to develop their careers internationally.
Ten selected artists will work closely with curators who will mentor them. This will provide the artists with an opportunity to develop their practice, gain an insight into the dynamics of the art industry, and develop international networks. The artists will first meet with their mentors during the opening week of this year’s Liverpool Biennial, which opens on 9 July 2016. Following this initial meeting, the artists and curators will hold regular conversations, and the artists will be provided with a travel budget to visit their mentors in their home cities.
The artist and curator pairings are:
Simeon Barclay (Chester) — Rattanamol Johal (C-MAP Fellow for Asia in the department of Media and Performance Art at MoMA in New York, USA)
Jacqueline Bebb (Chester) — Amanda de la Garza Mata (Associate Curator at the University Museum of Contemporary Art in Mexico City, Mexico)
Lindsey Bull (Manchester) — Mónica Espinel (Independent Curator based in New York, USA)
Robert Carter & Lauren Velvick (Manchester) — Meaghan Kent (Director and Chief Curator of SITE95 in Guadalajara, Mexico)

The Liverpool Biennial Associate Artists Programme is organised by Liverpool Biennial in partnership with New York based Independent Curators International (ICI) and CACTUS, and supported by a £250,000 investment from the Arts Council England International Showcasing Fund.
The programme creates opportunities for artists based outside London to build sustainable international careers, provided they have the opportunity to strengthen their networks and markets beyond the UK.
Capitalising on Liverpool Biennial’s national and international networks, each artist will be provided with mentoring and showcasing opportunities, and support to develop the presentation of their work at Liverpool Biennial 2016 and other international events.
