Liverpool Biennial is delighted to announce Couleur Additive Liverpool. Paris, 2014, a special limited edition created by one of the major figures in contemporary art, Carlos Cruz-Diez. It is made on the occasion of his 2014 Dazzle Ship commission Induction Chromatique à Double Fréquence pour l’Edmund Gardner Ship / Liverpool. Paris, 2014, jointly commissioned by Liverpool Biennial, Tate Liverpool and 14-18 Now, in partnership with National Museums Liverpool using a historic pilot ship owned and conserved by Merseyside Maritime Museum.
In a career spanning more than 60 years, Cruz-Diez has become known for his experiments with light, movement and colour. Rather than using colour in order to define the form of recognisable objects, Cruz-Diez wants to make it the most important aspect of the work and open up new ways of perceiving the chromatic world. He makes art with which the viewer can interact and which stimulates the senses in a very direct way.
Carlos Cruz-Diez (b. 1923, Caracas) is one of the great figures of contemporary art, especially kinetic-optic art. His artistic roots reach back to the Movimiento Cinético (Kinetic Movement) of the 1950s and 1960s. As his thinking on the visual arts has evolved, his ideas have changed attitudes on how colour is perceived in art. His works can be found in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; Wallraf-Richartz Museum, Cologne.
