Permanent and temporary commissions and projects
One World is a special art commission by Mark Wallinger which marks the centenary of the First World War through football.
Commissioned by Liverpool Biennial and 14-18 NOW: WW1 Centenary Art Commissions, and inspired by the Christmas Truce matches that were played during the First World War, artist Mark Wallinger has created a One World football. He has taken inspiration from Earthrise, the iconic photograph taken half a century ago on 24 December 1968 from Apollo 8 – an image of enduring beauty that depicts a peaceful planet floating in the vastness of space.
One World is a celebration of how football brings people together. In partnership with organisations including the EFL Trust, Sport England, the Football Foundation, Sport Northern Ireland and sportscotland, a limited edition of the One World football will be given to community projects and extraordinary individuals across the UK with the invitation to create and share their own videos in response to Wallinger’s call to action.
Celebrate the joy of playing the beautiful game and get your hands on a limited edition One World football at our exciting pop-up giveaway in Liverpool on Sunday 16 December!
Mark Wallinger (b. 1959, Chigwell, UK) lives and works in London. Wallinger has created some of the most subtly intelligent artworks of the last 30 years and is known for his career-long engagement with ideas of power, authority, artifice and illusion. Using epic narrative, lyrical metaphors and ardent punning, the artist interweaves the mythological, the political and the everyday. Wallinger won the Turner Prize for State Britain in 2007 and created Ecce Homo (1999-2000), the first work to occupy the empty plinth in Trafalgar Square.
A limited edition of the One World football will be given to community projects across the UK via partner organisations. We are not able to process any individual requests for footballs. For any other information about One World please email oneworldfootball18@gmail.com
