Permanent and temporary commissions and projects
Art in Motion is your chance to enjoy art as you navigate the city of Liverpool. A continued collaboration between Liverpool Biennial and Liverpool BID Company, for Autumn 2021, Liverpool-born artist Emma Dolan has been commissioned to produce a series of outdoor audio-visual works spread across eight sites. From 21 October 2021, you can discover Dolan’s works on streets, walls and windows of buildings across Liverpool’s Commercial District.
Born and bred in Liverpool, Dolan’s project centres around the notion of ‘Scouse-ness’–focusing on the phonetic history of the scouse accent and dialect (Liverpool and surrounding county of Merseyside). For Dolan, the scouse accent and dialect connect the people of Liverpool to the city. The accent forms part of Liverpudlian identity alongside the historic and modern city, together forming a particular and unique identity. Seek out specially-selected locations along a set route to discover Dolan’s bold graphic works, each accompanied by an episode of a humorous and conversational video which can be accessed by QR codes. Explore as a family using our activity sheet, download here.
A digital map highlighting all locations can be found below. Alternatively, you can pick up a physical version from various businesses in the area. Artworks can be found across eight sites including The Strand, Castle Street, Martin's Bank, Cotton Exchange Building, Queen Avenue, Brunswick Street, St Paul's Square and Drury Lane.
The commission will run until 21 November 2021, with a programme of artist-led tours and a free family activity sheet available to access in time for half term. Both map and family activity pack have been designed by local artist Gabriella Hernandez.
Remember to scan the QR codes next to each artwork to access corresponding video works produced by Dolan. All video episodes can be found below. Transcripts have been produced for accessibility, please find here.

Emma Dolan is a Liverpudlian artist, creating works centred around a fascination with the uniqueness of human existence and consciousness. Focusing on language and dialect, she playfully explores how these allow us to create a unique narrative to our existence and identities mainly through film, audio works and digital text. Dolan graduated from Liverpool John Moores University in 2020, being awarded the Tate Mentorship prize and a graduate residency at CBS Studio’s and Gallery. She has since been a core member in online residency programme SPUR, and has exhibited work in several group shows across the UK.
