Liverpool Biennial 2016 artist Samson Kambalu works across different media to explore received ideas in art, history and religion. He spent a week in Liverpool creating a series of short videos using his method of ‘Psychogeographic Nyau Cinema’ – a combination of film and site specific performance – which will be shown as part of the six episodes around which this year’s exhibition is organised. What exactly does the expression ‘painterly’ really mean? Manchester-based painter and Liverpool Biennial Associate Artist, Lindsey Bull, was left contemplating this question following the Speed Meet event held at Bluecoat last month. The purpose of the evening was to introduce the ten artists based in the North-West that have been selected to take part in the programme, and to provide people with a flavour of their work. For Liverpool Biennial 2014, Liverpool-based artist Kevin Hunt was commissioned as Education Artist-in-Residence. Throughout the festival, Kevin worked closely with our Education team to develop artworks and projects that engage people and places in making and thinking about art, as well as working on his own research informing his artistic practice. We talked with Kevin about the importance of artist-led activity in Liverpool and what it was like working with families (and magicians) to create new artworks. – Read more
