˜The future is with New Contemporaries... the national panorama it presents feels more engaging and urgent than ever.’ Evening Standard, 2009

‘The best means of seeing what is going on in up-and-coming artists’ studios across the UK.’ The Guardian, 2009

New Contemporaries (formerly Young Contemporaries) dates back to the first exhibition of graduates from Greater London Art Schools in 1949. Throughout the subsequent sixty years of its existence, it has identified serious artists from each generation and given them a platform from which to launch their careers. The premise remains as effective today as then.

The list of alumni includes David Hockney, Frank Auerbach, Paula Rego, R.B. Kitaj, Damien Hirst, Peter Doig, and Bob and Roberta Smith. Participants are selected through a rigorous process that is open and democratic by a panel of influential arts figures, predominantly artists who have themselves often previously exhibited in New Contemporaries.

The selectors for 2010 were Mexican artist Gabriel Kuri, Turner Prize-winner Mark Leckey and painter Dawn Mellor.
